My November thoughts...

Updated: Nov 19, 2019

WHO

I love this sign. I saw it in London in September. It speaks to the very need of people to share. And networking is fundamental to sharing who you are. Building time into your schedule to attend business-to-business gatherings, to hear presentations through professional groups or to join an executive leaders group can be essential to success. That’s one reason why Word and Vision is getting involved and connected through local chambers and with business leaders. It’s also a great way to meet people and share stories, especially since that is what I like to do the most – share your story.

WHAT

The Jottful Community recently published my blog on marketing as a reflection of the printing concept known as “CMYK.” Jottful is a company that helps small businesses create and develop world-class websites. They are also expanding their “Jottful Community,” bringing together professionals, like those at Word and Vision, who can help companies needing superb writing, photography and design. Thank you Jottful. It was a pleasure working with you and your team.

WHEN

A photo from this fall in Michigan.

Sometimes having a sophisticated marketing video makes the most sense. That requires a lot of expense and work, including script writing, hiring a videographer and an editor, using a good location and style of music. Then there are other times when a quick “doodle” video or “explainer” video work well. Another exciting approach we’re seeing more of is to simply videotape employees in their natural setting just talking about what it’s like to work for their firm. This style is less contrived and has a high level of sincerity, while being simple to produce and powerful in message. Do you want to get into video marketing ? Word and Vision and CaptureComLLC can help. Whether it is simple or more detailed, we can get your video game on for social media, your website, a blog or even a commercial.

WHERE

It's all about family.

My family with my 90-year-old father Tom.

In this season it is time think about family photos, either to use for a holiday card or just to remember the times you’ve spent together over the past year. Often times family photos are great when done in a studio, but a popular approach is a location photo shoot, perhaps at a favorite family spot. Those who love the city will find tons of locations that can be tailored to a set of fun and unique family images. If you need help with creating a cherished moment together, Word and Vision has the perfect approach. It begins with an interview to get a sense of what your family loves to do together followed by scouting locations. Yes, snow has come early, so outside may be a bit more challenging but what better way to say you love Michigan winters than a photo session outside? You’ll love the result, create more memories and have great images.

WHY

My photo inside a Roman museum.

It'a okay to fail. I love what Michael Jordan wrote about failure as a key to success. “I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” Why this focus on failure? Failing teaches us how to learn, how to grow, how to change the basics or redevelop principles and goals so that we can make the most out of life. Sometimes it’s hard, like the collapse of a relationship or the loss of a client you’ve had for years. Other times, they just make sense – getting to the top of a mountain might require several attempts, different routes along the way, all leading to that summit.

HOW

One of my photos of a steel worker.

Ever wondered what it takes to write a great job description to hire the best candidates ? It really isn’t rocket science, but like many things it requires skill and panache. Too much stiff company jargon doesn’t work. Nor is it helpful to be so laid back that prospective candidates are not sure what is expected of them. Instead focus on inspiring, on sharing the company’s culture and the kind of ideal candidate you want. If you need help showcasing what you company is looking for, and what you offer a potential employee, contact Word and Vision. We can assist you with words and ideas that go beyond the ordinary to the extraordinary, so that you find those extraordinary candidates for your company.
